Restless leg syndrome is a condition in which there is an urge or need to move the legs resulting from extreme discomfort. This typically happens in the evening or when sitting or lying down. You may also feel a desire to get up and move in order to make the feeling go away.
This syndrome may begin at any age, and may make sleep or traveling difficult.
Causes of Restless Leg Syndrome:
There is no known cause for Restless Leg Syndrome. It is suspected the an imbalance of the chemical in the brain called dopamine may cause the muscle movement. Stress and anxiety can worsen the condition.
RLS may occur more often in patients with:
Chronic kidney disease
Use of certain substances and medications, such as caffeine, calcium channel blockers, lithium, or narcoleptics may also worsen this condition. RLS is commonly genetic. This may be a factor when symptoms start at younger ages. The abnormal gene which passes from one generation to the next has not yet been identified. Because restless leg syndrome can result in a decreased quality of sleep, this can lead to daytime sleepiness, anxiety or depression, and confusion or slowed thought processes.
Symptoms of Restless Leg Syndrome
RLS leads to unpleasant sensations in the lower legs between the knee and ankle, usually in the calves. The feeling makes you uncomfortable unless you move your legs.
These sensations may be described as:
These symptoms may last for 1 hour or longer, and sometimes occur in the upper leg, feet, or arms. There may be rhythmic leg movements during sleep hours, called periodic limb movement disorder (PLMD). All of these symptoms often disturb sleep. Symptoms can make it difficult to sit during travel time, or through classes or meetings.
